Pool Safety: What to Know

As summer approaches and the weather heats up, many pet owners are eager to enjoy some fun in the sun by the pool. While pools can provide great exercise and enjoyment for both humans and pets, they also present certain hazards. Ensuring your pet's safety around the pool is crucial to preventing accidents and ensuring a fun, stress-free summer. Here’s what you need to know about pet pool safety:

Supervise Your Pet at All Times

Never leave pets unattended near a pool. Even confident swimmers can get tired, panicked, or trapped. Always keep an eye on them during swim time.

Teach Your Pet How to Exit the Pool

Pets need to know how to get out of the pool. Practice using steps or a ramp until they can do it confidently on their own. Mark exits clearly with a flag or visual cue.

Use a Pet Pool Ramp or Ladder

Not all pets can use regular pool steps. A ramp or pet-friendly ladder gives them a safe and easy exit. Make sure it’s non-slip and securely installed.

Consider a Life Vest

Consider a flotation device, especially for small or elderly pets, and breeds with short snouts or low stamina. Choose a snug, comfortable fit with a handle for lifting.

Block Pool Access When Not in Use

Use a pool cover (make sure it’s pet-safe) or a fence. Automatic pool covers should be strong enough to hold a pet’s weight.

Keep Water Clean

Rinse your pet off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt. Provide fresh drinking water to prevent them from drinking pool water.
